Greetings

We got a lot done this week!  We are working on our autobiographies in writing.  Thank you for sending in the photos for your students to use.  They should be returned by Tuesday at the latest.  In reading we focused on comparing and contrasting.  We used Dogzilla and Kat Kong to model the concept and they are super funny books!   We practiced rotating for guided math and reading and after a little practice, I think we got it!  Finally, on Friday we did our film canister rockets.  Some rockets shot off really nicely and others didn't.  We rapped about the scientific method and talked about experimentation.  We are settling into our routines nicely and I must say, this is a great class.  Our "Class Dojo" behavior management program is working nicely.  The students are receiving points for positive behavior and losing for negative behavior.  I give rewards out based on the number of points they have.  I will be posting homework and spelling words by Monday.  As a note on homework, students should read AT LEAST 20 minutes a night.  Spelling homework should be completed in their spelling spiral and if they do an activity that doesn't require writing or drawing, they need to write a sentence telling me what they did and a parent/guardian sign it.  If you have any questions, feel free to email me.

Thanks,
Mrs. Borg

We Made it!!

We made it through our first week in 3rd grade!  Good job!  I enjoyed getting to know each and every student.  We learned procedures, started building our classroom community, and I realized that most 3rd graders know who Elvis was.  We were goofy, ask your student about our dance off, yoga poses, acting like our favorite animal, class wave, and hand knots!  These are all brain breaks.  We also had our first mystery reader, my mom!  They enjoyed it so much, that when I started reading a book to them the next day, they wanted my mom to do it!  I have learned who the Harry Potter fans are and that we have a very athletic class.

We have started our "Class Dojo" and I will be sending more information to you.  This is our classroom behavior management system.  They will receive points and use that for rewards like no homework pass, wear a hat pass, use a pen day, and no shoes day!  Ask your child what a smencil is and how does Mrs. Borg feel about her smencils!

We will continue to work towards building a classroom community next week.  We will have a couple benchmark tests, nothing to study or worry about, just to assess where your student is in their learning.

Thanks,
Mrs. Borg

Ready, Set, Go!

Hope we are all ready for the first day of school!  For the next two weeks we will be working on classroom procedures, building a classroom community, and responsibilities.  Every year is a new teacher and with a new teacher comes a different way of doing things, that is why we spend time setting the expectations, goals, getting to know each other, and LEARNING CARPOOL NUMBERS!!

Please don't forget to send in your information if you did not complete it at open house.  Also, send in the $35.00 for the agenda, science workbook, math workbook, and specials fee, if you have not done so already.

Thank you to everyone for the supplies we have already received and I know more is coming in on Monday!

We have two students with nut allergies, so please keep that in mind when or if you send in something for everyone.  The other students will also be required to wash their hands after handling any peanut products.  Thank you for understanding!  My most important responsibility is keeping your children safe!

I do have a request already!  Since we have no playground equipment for 3rd grade yet, it would be nice to have some jump ropes, kick balls, hula hoops, and side walk chalk.  If you are able to send some type of outside play item, please do so!  Structure play at recess eliminates behavior problems, bullying, and other inappropriate recess activities.  I plan to be right there with them playing!

Thank you and again, I look forward to having your child in my class!

Meet and Greet

Hopefully I got all the paperwork I needed for a while from our families!  Just a reminder about the brag bag assignment, it is due on 8/17/2012.  I look forward to seeing what the students come up with!
