Third Grade Spelling Menu

Word Smart

J Write each word with rainbow writing. (each letter is a different color)

J Write each word using pyramid writing.  (first letter on the top, underneath are the 2nd and 3rd letters…)

J Write a story and use each word in it.

J Write a poem using all your words.

J Write a sentence for each word.

J Write a letter to a famous person using every word from your list.

J Write the definition and part of speech for each word.

J Write the words in order from A-Z and then from Z-A. 

J Write your spelling words in a list. Write a new word or silly word that rhymes with the spelling word next to it.                     *Example: cat        mat

J    Look up your words in the dictionary and then write the guide words you find on the top of the page.

J    Use a thesaurus to find synonyms for each word.
                *Use a computer to type a sentence for each word.

J    Make a word search at www.puzzlemaker.com  or at http://www.funbrain.com/detect/. Use all of your spelling words.                 *Complete the word search.

J    Teach a parent, friend, pet, stuffed animal or anyone else your spelling words.
  
Body Smart and/or Music Smart

J Spell each word aloud while clapping each letter. Do this three times and then write the word without looking at it.

J Drum beat, tap, or sing spelling words.

J Clap, stomp, or shoot your spelling words.

J    Do jumping jacks and spell your words. Each time you clap, say a letter.  This will wear you out.

JPut flour on a flat surface, and then use your finger to write your spelling words in the flour. You can also use shaving cream,
 pudding, rice, oatmeal, cream of wheat, etc.

J Spell your words using pasta, cereal, glitter and glue or anything else you can think of. Glue them to paper and bring them in. 

J Make up a silly song that includes your spelling words.


Picture Smart

J Draw a flower with 10 petals, and then write the word on the petals. (good for Nature Smart learners too!)

J    Draw a fall picture and hide your spelling words in the picture.  (good for Nature Smart learners too!)

J   Create a book of your spelling words. Draw a picture of each word.  If you can’t think of a way to illustrate the word,
write the word with creative letters, that you design, instead.

J Use a computer to write the words in creative ways (using Word Art).____

J  Create a treasure map. Bury your words on the map for others to find.

Number Smart

J Word Puzzles. Write each word on an index card. Cut the word apart by sounds. Mix all the pieces and put them back together. Do this three times.
                *Example:   tr      ai        n


J Each letter has a value. Write your spelling words. Then add up the value of each spelling word.
                *Consonants are worth 10.
                *Vowels are worth 5.
                *Example: s+a+i+d = 10+5+5+10=30

J  Create a maze and hide your words throughout the maze so that you can collect them as you find your way to the exit.

J     Use graph paper to write your words crossword style.  Try to connect them all using this format.
