I hope you all are having a restful weekend!
To recap this past week, in writing we finished our elapsed time fairy tales. I was quite pleased with myself on this writing prompt, since my goal is to infuse math and science into every subject! We also started working on a strategy called UNRAVEL, which gives the students steps to take for comprehending reading passages. I had to explain that we were going to practice on simple passages in order to practice the strategy and then work up to a much harder passages and they could apply what they learned.
In Math we started studying mass. We used scales to weigh and measure grams using different classroom items. We used non standard units of measure like paperclips and marbles, then switched to grams. We learned how to convert grams to kilograms and kilograms to grams. Then applied our knowledge to word problems. This is a new unit of study to 3rd grade due to the switch to common core.
In Social Studies we finished Eleanor Roosevelt and started on Economics. The students are very excited about Market Day and hopefully you all saw the note about the rules and are making a decision about what to sell. I know the deadline said to turn in the idea by March 8th, but I told my students they had until the 11th. I did get a lot of submissions back and told the students that we have a lot of them making cupcakes. If they wanted to change they needed to let me know Monday.
Finally, in Science we started studying magnets. The students enjoy the hands on activities and playing with magnets. Many students said they had a magnet set and I encouraged them to bring some items in. Just remember, the items would be for Science only!
Thank you, Thank you to all of you that sent in items for the Hurricane victims, scales for us to use, and money for the Movie Basket that Mrs. Traub is putting together. I know there is a lot going on and I feel I am always begging for something, but they are all for a good cause!

Market Day rules
Market Day Rules
1.
Students
will develop and make their own product or service with minimal adult help.
2.
Volunteers
need to be here from 8:30-11:00 on Friday, March 22nd to help students set up
their product in their classrooms. They
will also be helping with clean up after Market Day (beginning at 10:30). *Please remember that volunteers are here to
help all students have a successful experience.
3.
Market
Day will be open from 9:00-10:30.
4.
Baked
goods must be individually-packaged.
(Please make a note on the package or on a sign at the station listing
the ingredients, so we avoid problems with food allergies!)
5. Food products are not
allowed to be eaten during
Market Day. Students will be allowed to eat
some of their purchases for snack in their
class
room after Market Day is over.
6.
Other grade levels may be invited to
participate as “consumers” depending upon their Economic Standards.
7.
Students
will only have their desks for their business, so be aware of the limited space
available for display and/or services.

Third Grade Market Day
Project
Dear Parents,
All third grade
students will be studying economics and must complete a Market Day Project to
enrich classroom learning. This is a
graded project. Each child needs to
select a product to make or a service to provide. Although parents may help a little, each
student should do the bulk of the work in making the item. Here are some suggestions:
GOODS OR PRODUCTS – individually-wrapped baked goods or
candy, bookmarks, cards, painted sunglasses, paper airplanes, decorated flower
pots, jewelry, comic books, etc.
**NO DRINKS, SNOW CONE, OR “SLUSHIE”
TYPE PRODUCTS PLEASE!
SERVICES – face painting, carnival type games, nail polishing, hair
styling, etc. NO HAIR CUTS!
Students will need
to complete the following steps to be prepared to “sell” the product or service
on March 22nd.
- Decide what product will be made or
service provided. Turn in your plan
on March 8th - See bottom of
page-points will be deducted if not turned in on time.
- Make the product at home (plan to make
20-30 items).
- Decide on the price (# of tickets) of
the item or service.
- Plan to market the product with
creative packaging, if needed.
- IMPORTANT-
Be sure to bring your sign the day before Market Day. Students will be
setting up their business on their desks in their classrooms so space will
be limited. Please keep this in
mind when designing signs and product or service.
Teachers will be
giving tickets to students who demonstrate excellent behavior. This includes having daily work and homework
completed on time. These tickets will be
used as “money” on Market Day, so this project will also provide a reward for
excellent behavior.
Here are some
suggestions to help this project have the greatest impact on your child:
- Be a guide during the project, but
allow your child to be the decision maker.
- Focus on learning about economics by
using “economic terms” (product, service, producer, consumer, supply and
demand, etc.)
Volunteers will be
needed from 8:30-11:00 am on Friday, March 22nd!!! This is a good way to get some volunteer
hours. Please let your child’s teacher
know if you can help!

Last week update
A big THANK YOU to everyone that has sent in supplies! Our class really appreciates it, very much. Let's see last week...in writing we didn't get to our elapsed time fairy tale writing, so that will be this week. We finished up the adaptation papers and discussed subject verb agreement. We had a great time laughing at how sentences sound when the subject and verb disagree. "You is soooo mean!" was our favorite. Well, at least it was my favorite. We have started a warm up prompt as soon as they come in the class. It is a silly prompt and we take about 10 minutes to write a silly story. We have been writing so many long, big assignments that we need to also remember it is important to be able to write efficiently and quickly.
In Math we continued working on time and elapsed time, nothing big to report there, the students struggle with this because it is so abstract. Any chance you have to discuss time with your student is great. Even using words like "quarter till or after, half past, noon, midnight, am and pm" when telling them when dinner is or when to stop playing video games!
Market day is approaching! I meant to send home the parent letter on Friday, but ran out of time. It should go home Monday! We continued working on Eleanor Roosevelt last week and I have to be honest, the information is a little.......dry. I know she did wonderful things and all, but the book is a little difficult for the students to be enthralled by. When I am reading I am throwing out all kinds of different accents to liven it up!
Science, we finished up adaptations and took a test on Friday. I will not joke, the test was higher order thinking, just like the habitat test was higher order thinking. I do not want my students to memorize information to spit it back for a test, then forget it. I want them to synthesize, analyze, and evaluate the information. Study guides are great, but 99% of what they need to know is the discussion we have in class and the reading they did. They need to pay attention and participate in class to do well.
Well, that was it for last week! Picture forms will also go home on Monday. If I have to leave you with anything to reinforce at home it would be to tell your students to SLOW DOWN! Take pride in your work, this is not a contest to see who finishes first. I have so many that are in a rush to finish they skip questions or pages and don't go back over the work.
